Part 1: Exercise - Visual Depth

For this exercise we were to draw a room in our house using each of the different types of perspective. I do find perspective hard and am still learning to improve in this area.

I used references from different places to help me get the basics right and help me understand the differences between them all. I picked my lounge to do these drawings from.

Meaning of the visual space:

The meaning from each of the different drawings changes quite dramatically depending on what type of perspective you are using. One point perspective makes the viewer feel part of the room, like they are standing or sitting inside it. Two point perspective is similar, in that the viewer feels like they are inside the room but not necessarily part of it. The room seems separate and the furniture feels unwelcoming.

Three point perspective feels like the viewer is a giant towering over the room and looking inside, the weird angles make things feel distorted and strange.

Isometric view is a more interesting one, it reminds me of when I was a child and played with dolls houses and little pocket houses. It feels like these types of drawings are more like pieces making up the whole, like the viewer is much larger and can move items around like toys.

When breaking the rules of perspective I feel the meaning is cosier and softer. It has an easy going feel to it, welcoming and calm.

The flat drawing reminds me of surveyor drawings, showing the elements in their most basic form from above, they are merely shapes with no personality.
