Part 2: Research Point - Architectural Illustrators

Adesola Akinleye - Catching a Memory

Adesola Akinleye was commissioned by RIBA to create a series of video artworks inspired by Sir David Adjaye OBE, which was to be part of the 2021 Royal Gold Medal celebrations and this piece ‘Catching a Memory’ was part of a series of watercolour paintings produced later on.

‘Catching a Memory’, has fragments as part of the whole, glimpses into not only the building to the left side but to the sky, and sharp lines allude to confinement. Akinleye’s architectural illustration work has a more personal approach which I identify with more so than the formal types of illustration.

Akinleye’s work is inspired by how a place has made her feel, the connection to it, the memories it brings, especially in light of the pandemic and the isolation we have all felt. Akinleye’s paintings encourage the viewer to be present and not only take in the building but the view, the feeling and the atmosphere. Her video artworks can be viewed here: How do we remember as a society: Whispered memory

You+Pea - ‘Playing the Picturesque,’ digital illustration produced for RIBA, limited edition.

Sandra Youkhana and Luke Caspar Pearson are architectural designers of the virtual world. Their skills in the video gaming industry combine real world buildings with fantasy to create a whole new world. Their digital illustration ‘Playing the Picturesque’ is a combination of inspiration from the architectural designs of John Nash and their own creativity. Each of Nash’s buildings can be seen together in a new way. The illustration contains bright colours to draw in the eye and the composition leads the eye around the image to absorb every detail. Youkhana and Caspar Pearson are heads of the Video Game Urbanism Studio at The Bartlett School of Architecture under the name You+Pea and work with several cultural and educational bodies bringing architecture and video game design together with the intention to change the future.

Allan T Adams – Backyard Bootmakers Workshop and Princes Park Boathouse, Liverpool.

Working for English Heritage, Allan T Adams specialised in 2d plans, elevations, exteriors and interiors. Adams work has a very formal approach. Used for architectural plans, his linework needs to be to scale, accurate and presentable.

‘Backyard Bootmakers Workshop’ interested me because of its cut out design. A 3d image showing both the exterior and interior of the workshop at the same time. This was possibly used by English Heritage to showcase the history of this building in one of it’s public museums.

‘Princes Park Boathouse’ also took my interest because of the creativity within the formal image. The photograph of the ruins of what once was a Boathouse, the while architectural lines filling in the missing information of what was once there. Showing the history of the building, bringing together imagination and reality.

Michael Blower - Farnham Bypass, Sketchbook page.

Michael Blower’s sketchbook provides a glimpse into the ‘Farnham Bypass’ along with other places he has known or visited. Using ink in this drawing, Blower's has captured the view in simple linework, perspective and landmarks in the distance.

Blower’s work offers a personal view of the places he has sketched, bringing his own vision to them and bringing them to life with ink pen and watercolours.

Quick gestural lines give movement and life to his drawings without the need to be entirely accurate or straight.

The drawings from Blower’s sketchbook are like an old friend, holding memories and moments in time.

James Richards – Travel Illustrator and Author.

James Richards is a well-travelled man, sketching from various parts of the world with ink, pencil and watercolours. He has worked with many organisations and authored his own book, sharing his knowledge to help others to capture the architecture and beauty of the world and the people in it within their own sketchbooks.

This illustration ‘Ideas for an island’ produced for The SWA Group, sketched in ink pen caught my eye because of the lines and shapes Richards has used. A mix of empty shapes and cross hatching for shady areas of the gardens and house with suggestions of foliage using simple curved lines. Ink pen drawing is something I enjoy and Richards techniques show that you can illustrate a complex scene with amazingly simple techniques.

Monstropolis – Various Artists at Pixar.

Monstropolis, a place from the imagination of concept artists at Pixar. Using real life buildings and the reasonings of what a Monster’s city might need to be like, Pixar created a scene that was believable and yet full of imagination and wonder.

Ink linework with bright coloured pencil make this illustration both accurately detailed and an inviting place to delve into. Both mediums work well together to bring Monstropolis to life.

Leigh Ellexson – Pencil Landscape

Leigh Ellexson describes her buildings and landscapes with tone and shapes. Blocks of shading are used to fill solid areas and delicate shapes form the details in the foreground. Ellexson’s line work is soft and inviting, her compositions provide a path leading you into the drawing as if you were actually there.
