The magic lantern originates in the 1640's when Athanasius Kircher began experimenting with slides and projections whilst in Rome. The magic lantern was a combination of projections and slides which made imagery move to tell a story. Animation today shares this illusion by using a series of drawings in succession to create movement within characters and scenes that is so precise it is like watching a movie with real life characters where movement is natural and convincing.

Animation has moved on so dramatically with the use of technology that elements such as hair, fur, and water are so realistic it can be hard to believe they were animated.

The above videos show how basic the animation through slides was originally but they set the stage so to speak for what was to come in the advancement of moving pictures. Now you can animate any type of character and make it believable that it is real, can move like a human and has emotions and feelings.

Whether it is hand drawn, puppets, clay or animated on a computer the ability to produce many frames (slides) to create movement of the characters has bridged the gap between fantasy and reality in entertainment.
