Looking at a large range of ceramics from various periods and contemporary there are recurring themes such as strips, spots, speckles, repeating patterns or single motifs. Florals are a popular theme and in contemporary ceramics, cute faces with bold, simple shapes are a popular choice. For a ceramic design to be successful it needs to cover the whole of item either by colour, white, or by repeating pattern. It can be simple or complex as long as it covers the whole area, otherwise it would look unfinished.
Ceramics definitely has it's own visual language, for example; Emma Bridgewater uses a repeating pattern on her ceramic designs created with stencils and hand painting. Some designs reflect nature, which is a huge theme for her brand but also the important moments in life such as seasonal events, cultural events and everyday moments. Emma Bridgewater offers personalisation on her ceramics which gives more meaning to an item, whether it be for a special occasion or simply adding your dogs name to his water bowl.
Use of colour on Cornishware is a communication in that it appeals to specific people. Originally known for their blue and white striped ceramics they have now brought out other colours. The original blue and white was inspired by the waves and blue skies of Cornwall.
Just like in 2D illustration, you can tell a story, create a character or simple connect a person to their family and interests within ceramics but instead of the usual rules that apply on paper, in ceramics the full curved surface needs to be considered.
